Mary's Sem Paper: A Tale of Woe.

Mary's Seminar Paper was to be between 24 and 25 pages in length. NO LESS than three-quarters of the 24th page to be filled; no MORE than the very last line of the 25th page. This is a DEPARTMENTAL requirement.

Mary wrote and wrote and wrote and thought she wouldn't have a long enough paper, because she had only seventeen full pages written when she woke up this morning.

Boy was SHE in for a surprise.

Length of paper with 12-pt. font and 1.25" margins: 28 pages and two lines.

Length of paper with all double spaces after periods converted to single spaces: 27 and three-quarters pages.

Length of paper with 1" margins (the actual size requested by the professor): 26 and a half pages.

Length of paper with .9" margins and 11.5-pt. font: 24 pages and two lines.

Final length of paper with 1.1" margins and 11.5-pt. font: 24 and a half pages.

If Kyra takes a ruler to Mary's margins, Mary is going to beat her to death with her copy of The Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire, Volume One.

Have you tried any other options, such as fine-grained control of the line spacing or, even better yet, character spacing/kerning? That would make you truly hardcore--anybody can change margins.

Wow. I am impressed. Nothing like playing with the paper settings to make a paper the right length. Imagine my surprise when I found out that French paper is not the same size as american paper! Who would have thought!

Renee Rosnes (who pronounces her first name to rhyme with "zucchini," don't ask me why) is terrific. I heard her here with Bobby Hutcherson, then at a SF Jazz Fest program with Joshua Redman. Wonderful player--chops a-plenty but never just glib.

wait, did you try 12 font and one inch margins? How'd that work out? I agree with Dan about kerning.

What is this kerning you speak of?

I like to do 1.9 spacing instead of double; it's almost indiscernible from double by the naked eye, but can save you lines and lines of space in the long run.

This is a random NPR "Jazz Piano Christmas" compilation. I enjoy it immensely.

hey, I totally helped in the process (if shouting fairly useless comments from the next room counts), don't I get any credit! I mean, you may have written a ~25 page paper, but I shouted out random ways to make it slightly different lengths...I'm the one with the real accomplishment here!
