This was actually in the cover letter that Indiana sent me:
"I must be frank in acknowledging that these are not the best of times to consider beginning a graduate program in history . . . . Graduate training requires many years, and employment prospects are very competitive . . . . Sincerely, John Bodnar, Professor and Chair"
Why? Why must I desire only a path that is long and hard and very very impoverished?
Of course, I think I'm taking Indiana off the list anyway. They don't have anybody working in my field, and all the ancient people are men besides. Although this Bodnar fellow does sound pretty neat (or honest, at any rate). Too bad he's an Americanist.
