Argh. I have about 150 pages of reading to do before Tuesday, all of it for one class. Not to mention the 40-odd for Wednesday. And I don't even *have* reading for U.S. history this week, 'cos I have a paper due Wednesday. Stupid major. *pouts*
Also, I really, really hate the Mendelssohn variations I'm playing. This is the first time I've actually detested putting fingers to keys with Dr. Scott as my prof, and it feels strange and icky. I'm supposed to play this sucker at a master class with some bigwig from Eastman on Friday, and I just don't want to. It will be humiliating, because I don't play the piece well, and I don't play it well because I hate it, and I hate it partly because I don't play it well. The fatal circle of musicianship.
Whine whine whine. Whine some more. Ugh. Maybe I'll just go to bed.
Hee. The little frowny lemon is so cute.

we've been studying many of mendelssohn's "songs without words" and I have developed an intense distaste for them.
I empathize, that circle can be oh so vicious. good luck on Friday.

My elementary school janitor wore a navy blue sweatshirt every day that said in big white block letters: STOP PLATE TECTONICS

Dude, so did mine. His name was Mr. Curr, and for years I wondered what on earth that shirt was supposed to mean.

Wow, you and I went to the same elementary school. I wonder if we know each other...

There was a kid in my fifth grade class named Ben Miller. He was tall, skinny had large ears and usually hung out with another kid named Taylor Hudson. Was that you?

I think you've got me pegged. I'm ashamed to say I don't remember you, at least by name.

I haven't seen Taylor in a long, long time, but last I heard he got kicked out of PHS for lighting the bathroom on fire.

My name wasn't Superquail in fifth grade - I didn't get that name until middle school. At Jefferson I was called Ruty.

Taylor got kicked out of PHS for lighting the bathroom on fire? I haven't heard that one before! The bathroom DID catch fire, I think it was some time in the middle of my junior year (or maybe senior, they're all running together for me now) but it happened on the weekend and it was an electrical fire. Besides, Taylor left PHS half way through freshman year so he was long gone by then. I don't think he was kicked out, per se, I think he just dropped out and then went to the alternative high school.

Well, yes, I think I definitely would remember someone called superquail, so I did check your info first and unfortunately it didn't ring any bells. Anyway, it's nice to...meet you.

I guess somebody lied to me about Taylor. I forget who told me about it, Andy Wolverton I think. Oh well, it makes a good story so I'm gonna stick with it.

You know Andy Wolverton? At some point (maybe it was as far back as middle school) a kid named Albert Hsu decided that Andy should be called Ande and proceeded to do so, much to Andy's despair. That poor kid was picked on to no end! Everyone made fun of him at a pretty much constant rate. I'm surprised that he survived at all.

Actually, he seems to be doing quite well. Last time I talked to him was going to school at the University of Washington and doing some fun stuff over there.

Do you remember any of the other kids from our fifth grade class? My friends were Joyce Franke, Jessica Campbell, Laura Kunkel, Geetanjali Vadya, Angela Bonner, Jennifer Taylor and I had a horrible crush on a kid named Nathan Skavdahl. Do any of those names ring a bell?

Do you also know Andy Wolverton? Or are you just amazed that there are so many people out there from the Pullman-Moscow area who know each other in rather odd ways?

I remember most of those people. Especially Albert, that little guy was great. And Nathan, we were on the same basketball team all through elementary school. I seem to remember going to several of his birthday parties.

As for Andy, when he moved to Pullman in sixth grade we rode the bus together and one day we just started talking and became best friends for the next 3 or 4 years. (I moved to Moscow though.)

I also remember Geetanjali quite vividly as maybe the quietest person I've ever known. Ha, this is fun.

Yes, Geetanjali was painfully shy. She seemed to be afraid of her own shadow. But I do remember quite vividly that one day in class she had to give a presentation, and though she faced the back of the room, she spoke loudly and clearly and everyone was completely surprised.

Also there was a kid in our class named Ryan Bidle, I think. He lived up the street from me. I remember he said that the only reason Geetanjali got an A on her state report was because Mrs. Leigh favored her since she was so shy. This really made me angry because Geetanjali had to work twice as hard as Ryan did just to get the courage to go up there in front of the class, and she did a good job. So of course I yelled at Ryan on the playground, and then Mrs. Leigh got mad at me. Great.

Do you remember Tyson Lumpkin at all?

Wait! I just remembered one more person. There was a very tall kid in our class named Evan Wood. I remember him because he and Albert were very good friends and that was just funny.

Also, I think there was someone named Brian Melhart. His mother was my P.E. teacher in high school so he's always been around. I also remember a girl named Nina, but since I can't remember her last name, or really anything about her, I doubt that is particularly helpful.

Oh yes, and there was David Horne. He was REALLY picked on, just absolutely brutally. It's getting kind of scary to think about all of this.

Yeah, I remember all those people. I have stories about most of them too (remember when Brian Melhart's dad gave us that talk about how he foiled an airplane hijacking or whatever?) but I don't have the energy to talk about all of them. I will say this, though: Have you been to Jefferson lately? It's a far cry from the deathtrap we went to. I remember getting stabbed by rusty nails on the fort. Now you couldn't hurt yourself if you tried. (That's probably not true, kids find a way.)

Yes, I went to the new Jefferson soon after it was built, and all the fifth graders were giving tours to the visitors. I live on Military Hill so I drive by it frequently. It was such an odd feeling, this tiny little boy was showing me around and I was sure that he must be a first grader, or a second grader at best. I had always remembered fifth graders as big kids, I know I was VERY BIG when I was in fifth grade. Since then, however, I have become nothing more than a 5'1" Jewish girl, who apparently is difficult to remember. :)
