Query for the computer savvy:
Why is my laptop suddenly running slower than molasses in January? This started about a month ago, maybe a little less. Sometimes it will be its old speedy self, usually after its been shut down for some time. (Simply restarting it makes no difference.) I've tried deleting extraneous files and potentially harmful programs, run a spyware remover, defragged the harddrive . . . Help?

Is it getting hot? I've noticed that when a laptop has been on for a long time with nothing to separate it from the surface it's sitting on, it will slow down for no appearent reason, but both it and the surface it's sitting on will get very warm. If you don't have a device that dissipates the heat, try raising it off the surface by proping it on some pencils, or get a grate (you can by them at some computer stores).

That might be part of it, but it's not a consistent thing--i.e., it's sometimes really slow when cold and really fast when hot.

mine is irritatingly slow most always, but in general, it's less slow if I turn it off after each time I use it, and don't leave it on for extended stints of time
