More progress made:

I have figured out that I do, in fact, want to go to graduate school. Desperately.

This means, of course, that I am crazy. On the other hand, it seems a step toward refining my goals, which currently consist of the following: 1) Do not starve.

And don't forget--those increases are just at the state schools. Private schools have created a cardboard superiority culture, each student trying to one-up the next. Pressboard and even recycled ledger paper dwellings are under development, but nearly all of the end products are being appropriated by the war effort.

It's important to aim high!

I just read that a new Doctorate looks to make around $92,000 as a professor. So really the question is, provided you make it through and get a job, is not if you starve, but if you can eat somewhere fancier than McDonalds.

Of course, that's if you're paid the market average. My dad's a tenured full prof, and he estimates that he's underpaid by about 20%.

Yeah, my father doesn't make anywhere near $92,000 and he is a tenured, full professor. And it's not even in an unprofitable area like history, either. Where did you get that statistic, Casey?

I apologize, that figure was for business school. However, the median income for an Associate professor of History is $52,402. Depending on the institution and whether or not you make full professor it can go up. Low end (25th Percentile) is about $44,000).

Yeah, that makes a lot more sense. $44,000 is actually a fair-sounding starting salary, especially if the professor in question doesn't have any dependents. Any less than that would probably be getting you a little too close to the poverty line.

Oh, I see. That's the TOTAL amount you're expected to make. Full stop.

I'm sure you'll get in and make gobs of money, even if you aren't a professor because in the small pond of Whitman (at least) you're the best student in that department for this year and last. And what's better, I doubt it's going to go to your head.

The man has a point. And you can always make bundles off of writing books with sexy titles like "Polygamy, Prostitutes, and Death." I'd buy it.

I've decided grad school, too - mostly because I'm 24, about to graduate, and STILL have no idea what I want to do with my life. So grad school it is!
