I want to lie shipwrecked and comatose
Nov. 15th, 2005 04:50 pm Grad school update: I went and talked to Dana today, and he was really . . . positive. For those of you who know him, this is unusual. Anyway, he gave me some very good advice, like not going somewhere where the faculty stab each other in the back and use grad students in power plays. I said I was fully prepared not to get in this fall, and he said "oh, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting in." !! So I feel much better about everything. Of course, he also mentioned that there are a lot of alcoholics among ancient historians. He said, quote, "I wouldn't go to Berkeley if my life depended on it," and advised against Harvard and Yale. He was also down on Cornell and Penn. I definitely agree with him about the latter. Kyra had a miserable time there, and I don't think it was just her. UW was suprisingly high in his estimation, and he says the faculty there are really supportive . . . I may have to give it more thought.

I actually wrote some of my thesis yesterday. You'd think it'd be empowering, but I'm mostly just tired.
Twenty-three credits next semester: insanity or rigorous intellectual challenge? Discuss.

Date: 2005-11-16 01:38 am (UTC)Oh, and you should totally go to Cal Berkeley. That way, we can be total dorks in the same school! (I am going to Cal, it's been revealed to me, I'm a religion major I know these things.) We can have duels to determine which old-ass language is the best of all time!
سلام! (ha ha! I hope you can see that)

Date: 2005-11-16 01:48 am (UTC)We'll be total dorks wherever we go. But it would be nice to get liquored up and go sing karaoke with you.
(Greek is older. It therefore wins.)

Date: 2005-11-16 02:23 am (UTC)And as for the 23 credits, what are they credits in? I'm guessing you're still doing a certain amount of Music, but that will be balanced out by the fact that your Thesis, though only counting for one or two credits, will be taking up your entire life. So, I'm going to go with "insanity."
