This is basically to show off my new icon. I got bored with all my old ones.
I'm still sort of reeling from the Cornell thing. It looks like they really want me. The guy with whom I'd be working emailed me, and he's supposed to call sometime tomorrow. I don't really know what to ask him; any suggestions? I do want to know some things about resources and library holdings, but I can't figure out how to bring up a lot of it without sounding demanding or whiny. Oh well. This is a good sort of confusion. No word from the other five schools, but I can handle it now. I would like to know about Stanford before I get down there, though.
I overslept this morning and missed Latin, and then I totally skipped Kyra's class to take a nap. (And do some orals reading. I'm not wholly a deadbeat.) Bad Mary. Bad bad. On the other hand, I don't really care, and neither do my profs, apparently. So . . .

So I talked to Leanne Eareckson...she went to Cornell for undergrad..she said it's too intense to do undergrad, but that it's a WONDERFUL grad school and that she was very proud to have a former moscow high school student at her Alma Marter (However you spell that)

If they call you, that's good! It's become standard for grad schools who are offering you money to have a prof call you. I received a call around this time last year from the guy who ended up being my first year advisor. It's kinda nice to have one person who knows your name when you get on campus.

Here are some questions that came up during my orientation.

Consider asking him about the first year program. Is there a required course of study in your first year, or is it pretty open? On average, how long do graduate students take to get their masters/doctorates? What's grad student support like over the summer? If none is available in the history department, what about in other departments? Are there opportunities for collaboration with professors outside the department (if you're interested in that sort of thing)? How do graduate students stay sane?

Do you have a teaching assistantship or a research assistantship? If it's the former, I'd suggest asking about training provided to TAs, and how frequently grad students collaborate with their professors.
