I went arching on Tuesday, and it was FUN. (Well, what would you call the intransitive verb form of archery?) I am teh suck, but since I haven't shot since junior high, I consider my performance quite satisfactory. And I will be better Friday.
Several of the profs I asked for Rhodes recommendations were very enthusiastic. Dana, for one, which I found peculiar (given that I'm pretty sure he hates me), but then, I brought him news of a former student whom he really liked. And he has trouble remembering who I am, anyway, so maybe he's currently confusing me with someone he doesn't hate. Cotts was EXTREMELY enthusiastic--and he *volunteered* to vet grad schools for me when I brought him the short list. One thing that really sunk in Tuesday--professors love to talk. I caused a wave of unproductivity that swept both Maxey and Olin, sparing none. (Except Schmitz, because he wasn't in his office. Always two steps ahead of me, Mr. Bond.)
I feel like a trend whore, having become addicted to both Sex and the City and Firefly. The funny! The clever dialogue! The good-looking men!
So I seem to have single-handedly started a Japanese navy livejournal craze. Go me.

Japanese navy recruiting ad.
I have watched this five times in a row, and I am no closing to figuring it out. But I urge you to bask in the wonder. My favorite part is the hip swivel just after "for love."

I'm utterly exhausted. Nine o'clock classes are another thing that makes Baby Jesus cry.
Stupid Rhodes scholarship. It's too much damn WORK for something I'm not going to get anyway. And I'm just pissing off my profs asking for letters of rec a month before I'm going to have to go back for the grad school. Gar.
I was going to do archery this afternoon, just to prove to all of you that I don't just talk about academics, but it was canceled. So there.

Today's achievement: managing to superglue my watch to my wrist.

Good news, Stephanie--current fancy: Stanford University.

I got a library locker! w00t! No more hauling Tacitus all the way to hell and gone.
So 401 really sucks.

. . .

The locker was really the only thing I had to say.
Also pie.

Does it explain a lot about me that this guy is my intellectual hero? If ancient history were a concert tour, I'd be his groupie.

Tulane's website is back up.
My first 401 class is tomorrow night. It promises to be a three-hour exercise in tedium. Perhaps I will drink caffiene with dinner.
Schwa kicks ass, but singing bad songs makes Baby Jesus cry. It's a toss-up.
The semi-final list is comprised of 31 schools. Now I have to decide which ones I'm actually applying to. What think you, my peers?

I was so tired when I got up this morning that my eyeballs ached. I think I need to be going to bed earlier.
Our singing at the IHC block party kicked ass. Like, really.
Grad school list: 36. Current fancy: Oxford University. If I understand their website correctly, Oxford may in fact be far easier to get into than the University of Michigan. My brain hurts.

I just had the biggest "Duh!" moment ever. So I was looking at grad schools, and wanted to go to Tulane's webpage. But it wouldn't load. So I tried Googling it. Still no load. I tried a departmental page. Still no load. Then it hit me: Tulane is in New Orleans.

I seldom pray by myself; I have a strong liturgical/conformist streak (shall we say). But boy am I praying right now.

Grad school list stands at 41. Current fancy: The Ohio State University.

How's this for irony:
PARIS, France (Reuters) -- More journalists have been killed in Iraq since the war began in March 2003 than during the 20 years of conflict in Vietnam . . .
In other news, while Nicole has gone to Seattle for fun and games, Aspen and Barb arrived Friday night, ensuring much entertainment at home. Steph also came to dinner Friday, which was awesome. There are so many people I need to see more of . . . Rian and Amy, I am glaring pointedly in your direction. Went and saw The Brothers Grimm today, which was hilarious and definitely worth the five-fifty. I also got new pillowcases, so my poor mother can have hers back.
Here is my class schedule-to-be, for those of you who have forgotten:
HIST 401: Topics in Comparative History, Dott and Lerman. M 7.
HIST 385: Independent Study, Nourse (soon to be HIST 498: Honors Thesis, if all goes well).
GREK 205: Intermediate Ancient Greek, Vandiver. MTTH 11.
LAT 105: Elementary Latin, M. Burgess. MTTHF 9.
PHYS 101: How Things Work, Skorina. TWTH 10.
MUS 263B: Voice.
MUS 263C: Pipe Organ.
MUS 241: Chorale.
MUS 253: Accompaniment.
Oh, that's something. Any Whitties who read my lj: are you interested in singing madrigals at Renn Faire (and likely at other times as well)? No experience, training, or skill is required, only committment. You will get lots of praise and encouragement and Mary-baked-brownies . . .

List 5 reasons why you are a dork--and make them good reasons. Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud about how big of a dork you are! Then pick the 5 biggest dorks you know and have them do the same.

1. I sing harmony along to punk.

2. The biggest thrill of my Sunday was opening the box that contained my new Smyth's Greek Grammar.

3. I was once sitting around on a Friday night with some buddies, and when a dorm riot came up in conversation, I compared it to Kristallnacht.

4. I just Googled "Kristallnacht" so I'd be sure to spell it right.

5. This is my email signature:
"He'd noticed that sex bore some resemblance to cookery: It fascinated people, they sometimes bought books full of complicated recipes and interesting pictures, and sometimes when they were really hungry they created vast banquets in their imagination--but at the end of the day they'd settle quite happily for egg and chips, if it was well done and maybe had a slice of tomato." --Terry Pratchett, "The Fifth Elephant"

"Skepticism about the capacity of the human mind to grasp the structures of nature directly led to growing doubt about the possibility of such an identiy, to a recognition of the conventionality of language and its susceptibility to change, to the perception of language as a human creation, and eventually to the conclusion that, as the creator of language, man also shapes through language the only world he can know directly, including even himself." --William J. Bouwsma, "The Renaissance and the Drama of Western History."

And I tag: [livejournal.com profile] superquail, [livejournal.com profile] colvincd, [livejournal.com profile] sparnak, [livejournal.com profile] urbanwhittie, and [livejournal.com profile] napkin314. (That's right, smarty-pants: if you're so dorky, do it twice.)

I have rearranged my room so that the window-poking incident can never be repeated. This is a Good Thing. I also have a really nice new comforter and sheets.
I'm just listening to this CD for the first time--I got it last week--and it kicks ASS.

Well, back in Walla Walla. It's bloody hot here. Nothing new, really--still haven't unpacked, mostly. I did clear out a few boxes this morning before the heat overcame me. I am anxiously awaiting a Mexican food run with Dianne, who should be calling me soon if my telepathic signal worked.
Ruty and Katie's new place is nice. I saw Kerry Ginger at the library. I read a really neat article about what actually happened at the Iraqi National Museum. Um . . . I am a boring person?
fellmama: (weezer--www.dieselsweeties.com)
I just got this email, and it made me immeasurably happy. This is how I know I'm a geek:

". . . new online additions at the library:
. . . ·JSTOR (Arts & Sciences III): An additional JSTOR collection
was added which will contain a minimum of 120 titles at completion.
Focused on the arts and humanities, the Arts & Sciences III Collection
makes available journals covering language and literature, music, and
the history and study of art and architecture. The completed collection
will include additional titles in these fields as well as cultural
studies, film, folklore, performing arts, and religion."

More progress made:

I have figured out that I do, in fact, want to go to graduate school. Desperately.

This means, of course, that I am crazy. On the other hand, it seems a step toward refining my goals, which currently consist of the following: 1) Do not starve.
fellmama: (weezer--www.dieselsweeties.com)
Confession:
I just don't get Belle and Sebastian. Also Radiohead.
fellmama: (major)
GREs done. Officially not thinking about them anymore.
I have a list of 52 potential graduate schools that I need to start narrowing down. Anyone who wants to throw in their two cents may do so. Anyone who wants to see the list is insane.
Nothing else to report . . .

Boise was awesome. The concert was truly fabulous--I've been to few better, if any. And seeing Rachel and Nicole both was icing on the cake, so to speak.
I had my wisdom teeth out Friday, and I'm not dead yet. I'm not even in that much pain; the drugs are good. One side isn't even swollen. But I'm getting a little sick of chewing with my front teeth.
Next obstacle: the GREs. Icky icky icky. I need to bone up on the math bits. Otherwise I shall disgrace all the valiant teachers who endeavored to beat algebra into my head over the years.
fellmama: (weezer--www.dieselsweeties.com)
Volatile analysis is just irritating. First you have to use a key to determine which volatiles peaked when during the analysis, then mark them on the printout. But they don't always peak at exactly the same time, and some are tricky little buggers who hide very close together (like 3-methyl-1-butanol, which often masquerades as 2-methyl-1-butanol, the scamp). Then you have to enter them into the spreadsheet, which is needlessly complicated and has lots of volatiles listed (which frequently show up on the printout) besides the ones you are concerned with, so you must avoid them. Oogy. Plus I have no idea how to graph this. My boss thinks I'm simultaneously an idiot and a genius, because I forgot you have to turn on the dispenser before you can get water out, but I fixed a graph problem in thirty seconds that he couldn't fix in ten minutes. I am not the shiniest penny in the jar.
John Prine next week! And a little Walla Walla action, just to get my fix. Does anyone know if booklists are posted yet?
It really annoys me when people misspell "tomorrow." "Tommorrow" just LOOKS wrong.

Ah, Moscow. Land of perpetual semi-boredom. I think I'd be fine if I was in school here--I'd have plenty to do. It's just my innate laziness rising to the fore.
I went to the Needle Nook today for a pattern consultation . . . and they were having a sale. I am poorer but happier as I contemplate my spoils. Fortunately, "but it was on sale" has always been a legitimate excuse in my household.
So it turns out that I need to take the GRE on the 11th of August. Otherwise, I'd have to drive to Spokane. I think I'll just go ahead and do it--the practice I took was just like the SATs, and I was fine there.
I don't WANNA have my wisdom teeth out! I need all the wisdom I can get.
Bonus points if you can name the source of the subject line.
fellmama: (Default)
For the first time in forever, I am feeling positive about my future. Really. I think it is due to my brilliant idea. I need to decide three things: 1)a thesis topic, 2)where I want to go to grad school, and 3)what I'd study. So I am undergoing a lit search for the profs at each school I'm interested in. With luck, this will not only decide nos. 2 & 3, it will spark a thesis topic. I hope . . .
So work is boring. Doot doot doo. I need my wisdom teeth out, and I need to go to the eye doctor. Oogy. But I got paid for housesitting! Nearly 300 dollars. That's books for the fall.
